No Stray Bullets in Puerto Rico
Authorities in Puerto Rico have reported that there hasn’t been any stray bullet victims this New Year’s Eve. Gabriel López Arrieta, administrator for the Administración de Vivienda Pública (Public Housing Administration) has expressed satisfaction with the results of the anti-celebratory gunfire campaign Juntos por la vida: No más balas al aire (Spanish for ‘Together for Life: No More Stray Bullets’).
In Puerto Rico, it’s common, but illegal, for shots to be fired at the air during New Year’s Eve. By the time the newspaper is printed on New Year’s Day, reports of multiple stray bullet victims (mostly fatal) are the usual news. This year, the Public Housing Administration and other advocates have dedicated their resources to a campaign that consisted of marches, publicity and other activities that educated the public on the dangers of stray bullets.
The news was received by Puerto Ricans as a good reason to celebrate and be thankful, along with the news that the murder rate in 2014 was significantly lower than in 2013.
